unexpected: contemporary jewellery exhibition Nov 24 – Dec 8

In addition to being AiR at the fieldhouse, I’m also really involved in the small, but emergent, contemporary jewellery community in Vancouver.

I started out my formal art training in a Jewellery program at Kootenay School of the Arts, and while I don’t really make jewellery anymore, I’m still very interested in craft + dialogues surrounding contemporary jewellery specifically. When offered the opportunity by the Vancouver Metal Arts Association last year to curate their annual exhibition, I jumped at the chance.

The result is unexpected, and the exhibition is up from Nov 24th – Dec 8th at the Craft Council of BC gallery at Crafthouse on Granville Island.

The show features the work of 21 local and international artists, and is looking at jewellery through the lens of what is being called ‘post-disciplinary’ craft practice: hybrid practices that divorce themselves from the need to work in a specific medium, often including unconventional materials or expanding the concept of ‘jewellery.’
